How to successfully network from home

Mentoring and networking look very differently these days.

I was hesitant with how effective my 1:1 with Joy Fitzgerald would be.

Technology is great - but sometimes you can lose the natural flow of your conversations.

This interaction was different. It was not only my best virtual 1:1 but best overall 1:1 I have had with Joy.

Why was it so successful?

1. I prepared. Preparation now more than ever is vital. Think through what you want to discuss during your time with your mentor. For me specifically, I listed 3 agenda items: current projects, goals, and fun.

2. I set the scene. At the beginning of the meeting, inform the other person what you want to discuss and how they can contribute to the conversation.

3. I opened up. It is so easy to get be closed off during this time of stay-at-home orders. Think of something that you can share with the other person to encourage empathy.

It is not only about what I did - it took both of us to have an effective conversation. Joy opened up. She shared parts of her that I otherwise would not have known and made me feel comfortable enough to do the same.

As the self-proclaimed quote queen, here’s a quote I will leave you with highlighting the power of mentorship and virtual networking:

Mentoring isn't an extracurricular activity. It's vital for cultivating an enriching, inclusive community.” — Diana Olin

Until next time jumpstarters,
